The Fabaceae family is a massive group of flowering plants.

You might know them better as legumes, peas, or beans. This family is the third largest on land. It follows only the Orchidaceae and Asteraceae families in size. There are about 765 different genera in this group. Scientists have found nearly 20,000 known species so far. This means they make up about 7% of all flowering plants. They are very common in tropical rainforests and dry forests. These plants can be giant trees or tiny herbs.

Many legumes have a very special way to grow.

They work with tiny living things called rhizobia. These helpers live inside small bumps on the roots called nodules. This teamwork is called a symbiotic relationship. The rhizobia take nitrogen gas from the air. Then, they change it into a form the plant can use. This important thing that happens is called nitrogen fixation. It helps the plants get the food they need to grow. Some plants even have leaves that attract ants for protection.

Legumes have very interesting flowers and fruits.

Most flowers are showy to attract insects for pollination. In one group, the flowers have a large petal called a banner. They also have two side petals called wings. The bottom two petals join to make a boat shape called a keel. After the flower is pollinated, it grows into a fruit. This fruit is usually a legume, which is a dry pod. Many pods open along a seam to let the seeds out. Some species have even changed their fruit into berries or nuts.

This plant family has a very long history.

The order Fabales started about 94 to 89 million years ago. These plants began to spread out much later. They grew very fast between 79 and 74 million years ago. We know this because they have a great fossil record. Scientists have found old flowers, leaves, and wood in many places. These fossils help us see how they changed over time. They have been a part of our world for a very long time.

Legumes are very important to people and the planet. Many of them have been staple foods for thousands of years. You likely eat plants like soybeans, peas, or peanuts. Other common foods include chickpeas, broad beans, and even lentils. Some legumes like tamarind and carob are also used by humans. Even things like liquorice come from this large family. Because they help the soil with nitrogen, they are very helpful. They connect the tiny world of bacteria to the big world of food.
