Indigofera

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Indigofera is a huge group of flowering plants. It belongs to the pea family called Fabaceae. There are more than 750 different species in this group. These plants grow in warm, tropical, and subtropical parts of the world.

Most of these plants are small shrubs. Some are small trees or even yearly plants. Their branches often have soft, silky hairs on them. The leaves are usually made of three small parts. The flowers can be red or purple. Some flowers are even yellow or greenish-white.

These plants have many different ways of growing. They can take up nitrogen from the soil even when conditions change. This makes them very strong plants. The fruits are long, cylindrical pods called legumes. These pods come in different shapes. Some are straight and some are curved like a sickle.

The pods have a skin called a pericarp. This skin surrounds the seeds inside. Some species have a very thin skin. Other species have a thick skin with stiff tissue. Most pods pop open to spread their seeds. This is called explosive dehiscence.

People have used these plants for a very long time. Many species make a blue dye called indigo.

People in South America used this dye a long time ago. Their dyed cloth is older than Egyptian indigo cloth by 1,500 years. Marco Polo was the first to write about making indigo in India. In the Middle Ages, artists used indigo for painting. In Indonesia, the Sundanese people use the plant to make batik cloth. They call the plant tarum or nila.

In the Americas, the plant became a very big business. Colonial planters grew it in the Caribbean. They later moved the plants to South Carolina and North Carolina.

There, the Tuscarora people used the dye for their clothes. In the mid-to-late 18th century, exports grew quickly. Eliza Lucas Pinckney and enslaved Africans grew new types near Charleston. This became the second most important cash crop in the colony. It was worth more than one-third of all exports before the American Revolution.

Scientists also find these plants very useful. A chemical called aniline comes from the plant Indigofera suffruticosa. This chemical helps make many other important dyes.

The plants are also part of nature's food chain. Some insects use them as food. For example, the larvae of the turnip moth eat these plants. Because these plants are so diverse, they might be used in many different ways. They can grow well alongside other types of plants in a field.
