These vines can be annuals or short-lived perennials. They have thick stems and leaves with three pointed leaflets. The plant produces many flowers in clusters called racemes. These flowers can be white, blue, or purple. The fruit is a legume pod that can be several centimeters long. These pods are often bright purple or pale green. Inside each pod, you might find up to four seeds. The seeds come in many colors like white, brown, red, or black.

Growing these beans is a special way to help the earth. The lablab works with tiny soil bacteria called rhizobium. This relationship is called symbiosis, which means the two living things work together. The bacteria help the plant take nitrogen from the air. This process makes the soil much better for other crops. Farmers often use lablab as a green manure to improve soil. They might even grow it alongside maize to help the soil stay healthy. This makes the lablab a great tool for many different types of farming.

People have used the lablab for a very long time. In India, it has been grown since as early as 2500 BC. The name lablab comes from the work of Robert Sweet. He named the genus after an earlier name used by Carl Linnaeus. Scientists like Bernard Verdcourt have also studied its different types. There are two main cultivated subspecies and one wild subspecies. One special wild version lives only in Namibia. This long history shows how important the plant is to many people.

Lablab can grow in many different places around the world. It loves tropical and subtropical areas like India and parts of Africa. However, it is very adaptable to different climates. It can grow in sandy soil or heavy clay. It likes temperatures between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. The plant can even handle temperatures as low as 4 degrees Celsius for a short time. It needs about 700 to 3000 mm of rain each year. It does not like soil that stays too wet or flooded.

Many different foods are made from the lablab bean. In South Asia, people cook the pods and seeds in many tasty ways. In Kenya, the beans are known as njahe or njahi. Some people even eat the leaves like spinach or the flowers steamed. You can even use the seeds to make tofu or tempeh. You must be careful when cooking them, though. The beans must be boiled well in several changes of water. This is because they contain substances that can be toxic if not cooked correctly.
