The plant grows fuzzy brown pods that can be 5 to 10 centimeters long. Each pod holds about 12 to 14 seeds. These seeds come in many colors like green, yellow, brown, or even blue.

When you plant a seed, it can sprout in just 4 to 5 days. If you harvest the sprouts early, they are soft and white. If you let them grow, the plant can reach 76 centimeters tall.

Mung beans have a history that goes back thousands of years. They were first grown in India from wild plants.

Some experts found old, burnt beans in India from 4,500 years ago. In South India, people were growing beans with larger seeds 3,500 years ago. Ancient Indian writings called the mung bean mudga. They even listed it as one of nine lucky grains. These beans eventually spread from India to China and Southeast Asia. They even reached Thailand at least 2,200 years ago.

Farmers must work hard to protect these crops from many problems. Small insects like the stem fly or whitefly can hurt the plants. Whiteflies can also spread a disease called yellow mosaic virus. This disease can make farmers lose 85% of their crop in India. Other pests like the spotted pod borer cause big losses too.

Even bugs that hide in stored seeds can be a problem. They can make the seeds lose weight or change how they taste. Farmers must keep the seeds clean and dry to keep them healthy.

Even though growing them is hard, mung beans help the earth. They are very good at fixing nitrogen from the air into the soil. This helps the ground stay healthy for the next plants that grow there. They are known as one of the hardiest pulse crops. This means they can survive in hot climates quite well. Because they grow quickly, they can fit between other crops in a field. This makes them a very helpful part of nature and farming.
