Most people know them as red beans. They come from a plant called Vigna angularis. This plant is an annual vine or a bushy herb. It usually grows between 30 and 100 centimeters tall. While most beans are red, some are white, black, or gray.

These little beans are very important for food in many countries.

Growing the plant follows a specific way it works. First, the seeds sprout and take 7 to 20 days to emerge. The plant grows slowly compared to other beans. It reaches maturity in 80 to 120 days.

Bright yellow flowers appear in small groups along the stem. These flowers help make the beans through pollination. The beans grow inside smooth, green, cylindrical pods. Each pod can hold between 2 and 14 seeds. As the pods get older, they turn white or gray.

History shows that humans have worked with these beans for a long time.

Archaeologists think people began domesticating them around 3000 BC. Some evidence suggests they were grown in Japan for over 10,000 years. Scientists believe the wild ancestor lived near the Himalayas. This wild plant then spread to China and Japan. Over time, humans selected for larger seeds and different colors. This changed the plant from its wild form.

There are many interesting facts about how they are grown today.
