The snow pea is a special kind of edible pod pea.

Unlike many other peas, you can eat the whole thing. This includes both the seeds and the flat pod. You eat them while they are still unripened. Some people call them Chinese peas. This name likely comes from their use in Chinese dishes.

Even though they are called snow peas, they do not plant earlier than other peas.

Snow peas work differently than snap peas.

Snap peas have round pods with thick walls. Snow peas have flat pods with very thin walls. They do not have a tough layer of fiber inside. This layer is called parchment and is made of lignin. Two recessive genes help make the pods this way. One gene is called p. It reduces the membrane on the inner wall. The other gene is called v. It reduces the thickness of the pod wall.

Scientists have worked to name these plants correctly.

In 1825, a publication described them as having compressed edible pods. People often use the wrong scientific name for them. They might use Pisum sativum var. saccharatum. However, botanists changed this to Pisum sativum var. macrocarpum. This is because the old name did not match how the peas look. Gregor Mendel also used peas in his famous experiments. He called them Pisum saccharatum, but these might not be the same peas.

These plants are very helpful for a garden.

Snow peas are legumes. They host tiny bacteria called rhizobia in their root nodules. This is a mutualistic relationship. The bacteria fix nitrogen in the soil. This makes the soil better for other plants. You can grow them in open fields during cool seasons. They grow well in the winter and spring. They are good to grow with green, leafy vegetables.

There are many ways to use snow peas.

You can eat the whole pod. People also eat pea shoots. These are the stems and leaves of the young plant. In Chinese cooking, they are often stir-fried with garlic. Sometimes they are cooked with crab or other shellfish. You can also store them to keep them fresh. Using certain films and controlling oxygen can help them last longer. This keeps the plant's qualities good for a longer time.
