Some people call them Chinese peas. This is because they are in many Chinese dishes.

Snow peas are different from snap peas. Snap peas have thick, round pods. Snow peas do not have tough fiber inside. Two genes help make this happen. One gene reduces a layer on the inner wall. The other gene makes the pod wall thin.

Snow peas help the soil. They have tiny parts on their roots called nodules. These parts hold rhizobia. Rhizobia are good bacteria. They fix nitrogen in the dirt. This helps other leafy plants grow well. You can grow snow peas in cool weather. They grow in the winter and spring. People also eat pea shoots. These are the stems and leaves of the young plant.
