He lived a long time ago in the Austrian Empire. Mendel spent many years studying pea plants in a garden. He wanted to know how traits pass from parents to babies.

Between 1856 and 1863, he studied about 28,000 plants. He looked at seven different traits. These included plant height and seed color. Mendel found that some traits are dominant. A dominant trait is strong and shows up easily. Other traits are recessive. A recessive trait is quiet and can stay hidden for a time.

For example, Mendel crossed yellow peas with green peas. The first group of baby plants was all yellow. But the green color came back in the next group! He showed that these traits follow set rules. He called these rules the laws of inheritance. These rules are caused by tiny things we now call genes.

Most people did not understand his work at first. His big ideas were not famous until the year 1900. After that, many scientists studied his rules. Today, we call him the father of modern genetics.
