Snap pea

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Snap peas are a tasty kind of vegetable. You can eat the whole pod. These pods are round and thick. This makes them different from snow peas. Snow peas are flat and thin. In French, people call these "mangetout." This means "eat all."

Snap peas grow on climbing plants. These plants need a trellis to hold them up. A trellis is a frame made of wood or metal. The plants also need four to six hours of sun. They like cool weather. They can even grow in light frost.

Each pod holds three to nine peas. You can eat them in salads. You can also steam or fry them. Some pods have a string on top. You may need to remove this string first. This is called "stringing." Do not cook them too long. If you do, the pods may fall apart. Many places grow these peas. Some countries include China and Peru. The Amish Snap is a special old type. It is a true heirloom pea.
