Most lupins are small plants that live for many years. Some are annuals that live for one year. A few are even shrubs. One kind in Mexico is a tree!

Lupins have soft green or grey-green leaves. Many leaves have tiny silver hairs. The leaves are often split into five to 28 small parts. The flowers grow on a tall, straight stem. These flowers look like little peas. They have a special shape. This shape gave them names like bluebonnets.

After the flowers, the plant makes a pod. The pod holds several seeds. These seeds taste bitter because they contain alkaloids. This is a natural chemical. People grow lupins for food. Others grow them to look pretty in gardens. In some places like Iceland, they can grow too fast. This can cause problems for the land.
