Lupin bean

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Lupin beans are small, yellow seeds. They are a type of legume. People have enjoyed them for a very long time.

Some seeds were found in ancient Egyptian tombs. These seeds date back to the 22nd century BC. In Egypt, people call them "termis." They eat them as a snack during the Sham Elnesim festival. In South America, the Andean lupin was a food in the Incan Empire.

There are two main kinds of lupins. Bitter lupins have a strong taste. People must soak them in salt water for many days. This process removes the bitter parts. Sweet lupins are different. They do not need soaking because they have fewer bitter parts.

People use lupins in many ways today. You can eat them from a jar of brine. You can pop the seed into your mouth by tearing the skin. Some people use lupin flour to make bread. It can also be used to make vegan foods. These foods act like meat or eggs. Most lupins are used to feed farm animals. However, more people are using them for food now.
