Indigofera

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Indigofera is a large group of flowering plants. It has over 750 species. These plants live in warm, tropical lands. Most are small bushes or shrubs. Some are even small trees. Many have silky hairs on their branches. Their leaves often have three small parts.

The flowers can be red or purple. Some species have yellow or white flowers. These plants make long pods called legumes. Some pods are straight. Other pods are shaped like a sickle. The pods have a pericarp. This is the skin that holds the seeds. Some skins are very thin. Others are thick and stiff. Most pods pop open to spread their seeds.

People use these plants to make indigo dye. This is a blue color for cloth. Long ago, people in South America used this dye. In America, Eliza Lucas Pinckney grew new types of the plant. It became a very important crop. In Indonesia, people use it to make batik cloth. Some bugs, like the turnip moth, eat these plants for food.
