It grows best in hot, sunny places. It likes sandy or clay soil. The tree can live for a long time. It does not mind wind or salt from the sea.

The tree makes brown, pod-like fruits. Inside the pods is a fleshy pulp. This pulp tastes both sweet and sour. People use it in many foods. They make sauces, curries, and even candy.

In the Philippines, people use the fruit for sour soup. In India, it is used in chutneys. Some people even make a drink from it. They boil the pulp in water and add sugar.

Many parts of the tree are useful. The seeds contain oil. This oil can make paint or varnish. The seeds also have pectin. Pectin is a part that helps make jelly thick. The wood is hard and dark red. People use it to make furniture or boats.

Even animals use the tree. Ring-tailed lemurs eat the fruit and leaves. Elephants also eat the leaves for food.
