It grows on tall evergreen trees. These trees come from places like Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. They need a lot of heat to live. If it gets too cold, the tree might die.

The fruit goes through many changes as it grows. At first, the fruit is pale green or white. As it gets bigger, the skin turns dark green. The skin is called the exocarp. It stays hard while the fruit grows. To stop bugs and germs from eating it, the skin has bitter parts.

When the fruit is ready to eat, it ripens fast. The skin changes from green to red. Then it turns a dark purple color. This tells you the fruit is ripe. Inside the purple skin is the white flesh. This part is called the endocarp. The flesh is juicy and sweet. It also has a little bit of sour taste.
