The rambutan is a fruit from a tropical tree.

The name comes from a word meaning "hair." This is because the red skin has soft, fleshy spines. These spines are also called spinterns. They help the fruit breathe by letting out water.

Inside the skin is a white, sweet part called an aril. It tastes a little like a grape. Most rambutans have one brown seed inside. You can eat the fruit in a pudding or a dessert. Some people even use the seeds to make soap.

Small flowers grow on the tree. Many insects help the tree make fruit. Bees are the main pollinators, which are animals that move pollen. Bees visit the flowers to find nectar. As they move, they carry pollen from male flowers to female flowers. This helps the fruit grow.

These trees love warm weather. They grow best in places near the equator. Thailand is the largest producer of this fruit. In Thailand, farmers grow 450,000 tonnes of rambutans. Many other warm places also grow them, like Indonesia and Malaysia.
