The sugar apple is a small tree or shrub.

It grows best in hot, tropical places. It does not like the cold. If it gets too cold, the tree may lose its leaves.

This plant makes a very special fruit. The fruit is green and has a bumpy skin. It is made of many small parts called carpels.

When the fruit is ripe, these parts often separate. Inside, the flesh is white and soft. It tastes sweet like custard. You will find many dark, shiny seeds inside the fruit.

Small insects help the tree grow. Beetles visit the greenish-yellow flowers to help with pollination. This is the way the plant makes new fruit. In some places, fruit bats eat the fruit. The bats then spread the seeds to new areas.
