It belongs to a plant family called Annonaceae. This tree is famous for its delicious, edible fruit. People call these fruits sugar apples, sweetsops, or custard apples. It grows best in hot, tropical lowland areas. Because it likes the heat, it is the most grown species in its family.

Growing a fruit is a step-by-step way the tree works. First, the tree grows greenish-yellow flowers in the spring or early summer.

Small beetles visit these flowers to help with pollination. After that, many tiny parts called pistils start to grow together. These parts enlarge and mature into one large, bumpy fruit. It takes about three to four months for the fruit to ripen. The fruit is made of many segments that often pull apart when ripe.

We do not know exactly where this tree began. It is native to the tropical Americas, including places like Mexico and Colombia. Spanish traders brought the tree to Asia on ships called Manila galleons. This happened before the year 1590. Today, you can find these trees in many warm places. They grow in India, Thailand, China, and even the Philippines. Some people in Taiwan and Hong Kong are even making new types of these fruits.

There are many interesting facts about the sugar apple fruit. The skin is often pale green or blue-green with a bumpy texture. Inside, the white flesh is sweet and creamy like custard. You will find 20 to 40 hard, dark seeds inside each fruit.

These seeds can sometimes be ground up to use as an insecticide. The fruit is also full of nutrients like vitamin C and magnesium. A five-year-old tree can produce as many as 50 fruits in one season.

This tree connects to many other living things in nature. For example, the Philippine fruit bat loves to eat the fruit. As the bat eats, it spreads the seeds to new islands. This helps new trees grow in different places. The leaves are also used by people in traditional medicine. In Mexico, people rub the leaves on floors to keep lice away from hens. It is a plant that helps both humans and animals in many ways.
