It grows on tall evergreen trees that stay green all year. These trees like warm places with lots of rain and sun. They do not like frost or cold weather. The fruit has a pink or red shell that feels rough.

Inside this shell is a juicy white part called an aril. This aril has a lovely smell like roses or citrus fruits. It is very high in vitamin C, which is good for your body.

Growing a lychee fruit happens in a few steps. First, the tree grows many small white or yellow flowers in clusters. These flowers turn into fruit that takes about 80 to 112 days to grow. As the fruit matures, the skin changes from green to a bright red.

Inside, the white aril grows around one dark brown seed. Some fruits have very tiny seeds called "chicken tongues." These are special because they have more sweet fruit to eat. People often eat them fresh because the rose smell disappears in cans.

People have loved lychees for a very long time. In China, people have grown them since at least 1059 AD.

Long ago, Chinese emperors thought they were a great treat. They even used fast horses to carry fresh fruit to the palace. A French naturalist named Pierre Sonnerat named the plant in 1782. He wrote about it in a book called "Voyage to the East Indies and China." This helped people in other parts of the world learn about it.

There are many different types of lychee trees. The most common kind is the Indochinese lychee. It grows in South China, Malaysia, and northern Vietnam. There is also a Philippine lychee that people call alupag.

This type looks like an eye when you open it. In Indonesia and Malaysia, people grow the Javanese lychee. China is the biggest producer of this fruit in the world. Other countries like India, Vietnam, and South Africa grow them too.

Lychees are part of a big family of plants called Sapindaceae. This is the same family as the soapberry. You might know other fruits that grow in warm, tropical places. Just like tropical plants, lychee trees need rich soil to grow well. Many people use a way called air layering to grow new trees. This means they wrap a branch in moss to help it grow roots. This helps farmers grow more of these delicious, sweet fruits.
