In the past, people in Indonesia used the leaves as paper. They called this paper "lontar." People in Tamil Nadu and Telugu also wrote on palm leaves. They used a sharp tool to write on them. They even boiled the leaves in salt water and turmeric. This helped the leaves stay safe from rotting. This made them perfect for keeping old stories for many years.

There are many tasty things to find in the palm.

The fruit has a black or brown husk. Inside, there are sweet jelly seeds. These seeds look like a white lychee fruit. The soft orange pulp is full of vitamins A and C.

People also collect the sweet sap from the tree. They tap the top shoots to let the juice drip into pots. In Thailand, this sap was the main way to make sugar. They can turn the sap into a thick sugar called jaggery. Some people even turn the sap into a drink.

This tree is like a gift to the people who live near it.
