Making shea butter is a careful way it works. First, people collect the fruit from the tree. Inside the fruit is a large, oil-rich seed. To get the fat, workers roast and press the kernels. This creates a liquid that must be boiled and sieved. After it is cooled, it becomes shea butter. This fat is a complex substance with vitamins A, E, and F.

Scientists have studied this tree for a long time. The name Vitellaria paradoxa is the oldest scientific name. It was first published back in 1807. In the late 1800s and much of the 1900s, people called it Butyrospermum parkii. That name honors Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer. He learned about the tree while exploring Senegal. Even today, many people in the cosmetics trade use the old name.

These trees grow in a large area of Africa. They live in the dry savannah belt. This area goes from Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east. The trees grow in 19 different countries. These include nations like Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, and Uganda. A single tree can produce nuts for up to 200 years. It starts making fruit when it is 10 to 15 years old. Full production happens when the tree is 20 to 30 years old.

Many things you use every day come from this tree. In the West, shea butter is often an emollient for skin. An emollient is something that softens the skin. In Africa, it is a major source of dietary fat. In Ghana and Nigeria, it helps make African black soap. Even some insects depend on the tree. The Cirina butyrospermi caterpillar feeds only on shea leaves. People collect these caterpillars to eat as a protein source.
