The tree works in many interesting ways. It has medium green, glossy leaves. These leaves grow in an alternating pattern on the branches. The tree produces small, white, bell-like flowers. These flowers have a six-lobed corolla, which is the part of the flower that looks like a cup. When the fruit is young, it is hard. Picking an unripe fruit releases a white, gummy sap called chicle. This chicle comes from the bark. As the fruit ripens, the skin becomes saggy. The inside becomes soft and sweet.

People have known about this tree for a long time. The name zapota comes from a Nahuatl word. This word was used for other fruits that look similar. During Spanish colonization, the tree was moved to the Philippines. Now, many people grow it in tropical Asia. You can find it in India and Pakistan. It also grows in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is even found in Vietnam and Cambodia. Many names for the tree come from the Spanish language.

There are many facts about how the tree grows. A tree can grow taller than 100 feet. Most grown trees are about 65 feet tall. The trunk can be quite wide. It takes five to eight years for a tree to bear fruit. Once it is grown, it yields fruit twice a year. The fruit is a large berry. Inside, you will find one to six black seeds. These seeds are glossy and look like beans. They even have a small hook on one end.

You might recognize things from this tree in your own life. The chicle from the bark is used to make chewing gum. The fruit itself is a tasty snack. It has a sweet, malty flavor. The texture inside is grainy, much like a ripe pear. If you eat unripe fruit, your mouth might feel dry. This happens because of a substance called saponin. Scientists also study the leaves and seeds. They look at how they might help with health. It is a tree that provides food and many useful things.
