The breadnut tree is a very important part of the forest. It is known by many names like ramon or the Maya nut. This tree belongs to the Moraceae family. This family also includes things like figs and mulberries.

The tree can grow very tall. It can reach heights of 45 meters. That is about 150 feet tall. Some trees stay productive for 120 to 150 years. This makes them a steady part of the landscape.

Growing and spreading happens in a few special ways. The tree can change from female to male as it gets older. This is called being monoecious, dioecious, or hermaphroditic. To spread its seeds, the tree relies on animals. Birds and bats eat the fruit and move the seeds.

The fruit has a large seed inside. This seed has a thin, orange skin that tastes like citrus. When seeds are planted in full sun, they can grow fruit in 3.5 years. This happens once the trunk is high enough.

History shows a strong link between this tree and ancient people. Some people believe the Maya used it as a main food. Historian Dennis E. Puleston found that Maya settlements often matched where these trees grew. However, no fruit remains have been found at Maya sites yet. This makes the history a topic for debate among experts. The tree is even part of the names of Maya sites like Iximche and Topoxte. It remains one of the 20 most important species in the Maya forest.

There are many useful facts about the breadnut. The seeds are full of protein, fiber, and minerals like iron and zinc. You can cook them to taste like mashed potatoes. If you roast them, they taste like chocolate or coffee. People in Petén, Guatemala, make powder for bread and hot drinks.

The seeds are also used to feed many kinds of animals. Even the leaves are used as food for livestock during dry seasons. This makes the tree very valuable for farmers.

The tree also helps the Earth in a very cool way. It can grow in poor, dry, or even salty soil. It helps stop soil from washing away and acts as a wind barrier. A researcher named Eric Verrechia showed the tree helps store carbon. It does this through a process called biocalcification. This is a way the tree uses bacteria and fungi to turn gas into solid parts in the soil.
