Farmers use a special way to grow these trees called grafting. Grafting is when you join plant parts together. This ensures the new tree has the same fruit as the parent. This is important because the tree does not grow true to its seed. Grafting also helps the tree grow much faster. A grafted tree can make fruit in just 3 to 5 years. A tree grown from a seed takes 7 years or more.

These trees are very productive. One mature tree may produce 200 to 500 fruits every year. Some very strong trees can produce even more than that. In 2017, Mexican growers averaged 12.4 tons of fruit per hectare. In Florida, people harvest the fruit from May to July. Some types of the tree can even produce fruit all year. The tree likes fertile, sandy, or clay soils. It does not like cold weather or very dry soil.
