This tree is important for many different reasons.

This tree has a very interesting way it works. The fruit looks like a bumpy, yellow-green orange.

However, it is not a real orange at all. If you cut the fruit, a sticky white latex comes out. This latex is a milky liquid that oozes from the fruit. The fruit is mostly made of water and pectin. Most people and many animals do not eat it. It has a hard, dry texture that makes it hard to eat. Some animals, like squirrels and deer, might eat the seeds or the fruit. Some scientists think the fruit once grew with huge animals that are now extinct. These animals might have helped spread the seeds long ago.

People have studied this tree for a long time. A Scottish explorer named William Dunbar wrote about it in 1804. In that same year, Meriwether Lewis sent some cuttings to President Thomas Jefferson. These specific cuttings did not survive, but the tree lived on. The name of the tree comes from the Osage people.

The scientific name, Maclura pomifera, also tells us something. The word pomifera means it is a fruit-bearing plant. The genus name honors a geologist named William Maclure.

The wood of this tree is very special.

It is heavy, hard, and very strong. The wood is also quite flexible. Native Americans used this wood to make very good bows. The Comanche people also used it for their bows. Early settlers used the trees to make living fences. They would prune the trees so they grew into thick hedges. These hedges had sharp thorns to keep animals out of gardens. People used these hedges until barbed wire was invented in 1874.

You can see how this tree connects to the world around us. It is used today to protect soil from wind. In 1934, it was part of a huge project called the Great Plains Shelterbelt. This project planted millions of trees to help the land. The wood is so strong that it can be used for boats. It is also used to make fence posts. Even though it has many strange names, like hedge apple or monkey ball, it is a very useful tree. It continues to grow in many parts of the world today.
