These trees are famous for their huge, wide trunks. Many people call them "upside down trees" because of how they look. They can grow in very dry places. Most species are found in Madagascar, Africa, and Australia.

Some baobabs were even moved to places like Barbados and Asia. They are some of the longest-living plants on our planet.

These trees have a special way of surviving dry weather. They use their massive trunks to store water.

When it rains, the trunk diameter can even change. The wood inside is made of many fibrous rings. These rings help hold the water for a long time. This stored water helps the tree stay alive during droughts. This is how they manage to live in harsh lands.

Humans have studied these trees for a very long time. An Arab traveler named Ibn Battuta wrote about them in the 14th century. Later, a man named Prospero Alpini saw the fruit in Egypt in 1592. He called them "Bahobab," which might mean "many-seeded fruit."

Later, a French explorer named Michel Adanson described the whole tree in 1749. He saw a tree on the island of Sor in Senegal. Scientists named the genus Adansonia to honor his work.

There are eight different species of baobab trees.

One species, Adansonia digitata, can have trunks that are very wide. The smallest species is Adansonia gregorii from Australia. Most of the other species live only in Madagascar.

These trees have large flowers that open at dusk. The flowers move so fast you can see them open! They stay open for a maximum of 15 hours. Most of these flowers rely on bats to help them make seeds.

Baobabs are part of the natural world we see every day. Their fruits are like large berries with hard shells.

Inside the shell, you will find kidney-shaped seeds in a dry pulp. Many animals use these trees for homes. For example, birds like the mottled spinetail build nests in them.

Sadly, some old trees in southern Africa are dying recently. Scientists think they might be dying from extreme thirst due to heat.
