The Welwitschia is a very strange and special plant. It lives in the Namib desert. This desert is in Angola and Namibia. It is a very dry place with high heat.

The plant is famous for its unique shape. It is one of the longest-living plants on Earth. Some plants may live for 2,000 years. This long life helps the plant survive hard times.

This plant grows in a very specific way. It starts as a small seedling with two pink leaves. Soon, two permanent leaves grow from a woody stem called a crown. These two leaves grow for the plant's entire life. They are long and shaped like ribbons. The leaves can reach several meters in length. As they get old, the weather may split them into many pieces.

People first learned about this plant in the 1850s. A botanist named Friedrich Welwitsch found it in Angola in 1859. He was so amazed that he almost thought it was not real. He wanted to name the plant after a local name. However, Joseph Dalton Hooker chose to name it Welwitschia instead.

This name honors the man who first documented it.

There are many interesting facts about how it lives. The plant is dioecious, which means there are separate male and female plants. Both types grow cones that produce sweet nectar. This nectar attracts insects like flies to help with pollination.

In the desert, it may rely on groundwater and fog to stay alive. The seeds can survive very cold or very hot temperatures. Some people even call it the 'onion of the desert.'

Welwitschia is a great example of how life adapts to hard places. It grows in only one specific desert environment. This makes it special but also a bit vulnerable. It can face problems from disease or overgrazing by animals like zebras and rhinos.

Even though it is not in immediate danger, its growth is very slow. It shows us how a living thing can thrive in the heat for thousands of years.
