life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ephedra is a group of plants called gymnosperms. Most of these plants grow as small shrubs. Some species even grow like climbing vines. They are very good at living in dry, desert places. You can find them in sandy soils with lots of sun. They grow in many parts of the world. These include North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. They are also found in South America.

These plants have a special way of growing. Many species spread using parts called rhizomes. Their stems are green and use photosynthesis to make food. Most species have tiny, scale-like leaves. These leaves often fall off shortly after they grow. The plants are mostly dioecious. This means male and female parts are on different plants. The male parts are called pollen strobili. The female parts are called female strobili.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the genus in 1753. He named the group Ephedra. Later, in 1829, Barthélemy Charles Joseph Dumortier described the Ephedraceae family. These plants have a very old history. Fossils show they lived 125 million years ago. This was during the Early Cretaceous period. Scientists found these fossils in Argentina, China, Portugal, and the United States.

There are 74 different species in this group. One common species is Ephedra distachya. It is known as joint-pine or jointfir. In China, the plants are called mahuang. These plants contain a substance called ephedrine. A Japanese chemist named Nagai Nagayoshi isolated this in 1881. He found it in the Ephedra distachya plant. Ephedrine is used in medicine today. It can help prevent low blood pressure during surgery.

People have used Ephedra for thousands of years. In China, it has been used as medicine since 5000 BC. Very old remains were found in a Neanderthal site in Iraq. These remains are over 50,000 years old. In Morocco, researchers found plant remains from 15,000 years ago. While people use it for health, it can be risky. Ephedrine can cause heart problems like fast heartbeats. Because of these safety risks, the United States banned some supplements in the early twenty-first century.
