It is the most common type of baobab tree. You can find them in the hot, dry savannas of Africa. They also grow in the southern Arabian Peninsula. These trees are famous for living a very long time. One tree in Zimbabwe was about 2,450 years old when it died. Another tree in Namibia was about 2,000 years old. These giants are important to the land and many animals.

These trees have a clever way to stay alive during droughts. They use their huge trunks to store water. A single large tree can hold 136,400 liters of water!

The water moves into soft plant cells called parenchyma. These cells act like tiny storage tanks inside the trunk. When it rains, the U-shaped branches help water trickle down. This allows the tree to soak up as much as possible. During the dry season, the tree drops all its leaves. This helps the tree stop losing water through its leaves.

People have studied these trees for a very long time. An Arab traveler named Ibn Batuta wrote about them in the 14th century. Later, a French scientist named Michel Adanson saw a tree in Senegal in 1749. He wrote the first detailed description of the whole tree. Because of his work, the genus was named Adansonia. This name honors him. The species name, digitata, comes from the leaves. The leaves have five to seven leaflets that look like fingers on a hand.

Baobabs have many different names. Some people call them the monkey-bread tree. This is because the fruit has a soft, edible part. Others call it the upside-down tree. This is because the branches look like roots reaching into the sky. You might also hear it called the cream of tartar tree. This name comes from the dry, powdery pulp inside the fruit.

The fruit has a very thick, woody shell to protect it.

These trees are part of a huge family of living things. The flowers are large, white, and very beautiful. They usually open in the late afternoon. They only stay open for one single night!

After one day, the flowers turn brown and smell like something dead. This might help certain animals find them. The seeds are very tough and hard. They often need to pass through an animal or face a fire to grow. This helps the seeds start their life in the right way.
