The *Gnetum gnemon* is a very special kind of plant. It is a gymnosperm, which is a group of plants that does not make true flowers.

Even though it lacks flowers, it can look like other plants. This happens because of convergent evolution. That means different plants grow to look similar because they live in similar ways. This tree has broad leaves and parts that look like flowers. Most other plants in its group are vines, but this one grows as a tree. It can grow up to 22 metres tall.

This tree has a very interesting way it works. It does not grow flowers to make seeds. Instead, it grows male and female sporing organs called strobili. These grow on long stems that are 3 to 6 centimetres long. The male strobili grow on stalks and look like flowers. After the female strobili are fertilized, they produce seeds. These seeds look like fruit and can be 1 to 3.5 cm long.

The seeds change color when they are ripe. They can turn yellow, orange, purple, or pink. Each fleshy seed weighs about 5.5 grams. Inside the seed is a large, nut-like part called an endosperm. This endosperm is about 2 to 4 cm long. It is the part that holds stored energy for the plant.

People in Southeast Asia and Melanesia have used this plant for a long time. It is very important in Indonesian cooking. In Indonesia, it is known as melinjo or belinjo. People eat the nuts boiled, roasted, or even raw. They also eat the young leaves and the male strobili. These parts have a slightly sour taste. They are often used in soups and stews.

In Indonesia, the plant is used for many tasty things. One famous snack is called emping. These are raw chips made from smashed seeds. People deep-fry them to make crunchy crackers. They have a slightly bitter taste. In the Aceh region, people grow this plant a lot. They even consider it a vegetable of high status. In the Pidie district, women pick ripe fruit to make special foods.

Scientists are studying the plant to learn more about its chemistry. They found that the strobili are rich in a substance called resveratrol. This is a type of stilbenoid.

In 2006, researchers shared their findings in Canada. They found that resveratrol can help act as a food preservative. It can also stop bad flavors and help germs not grow. This could help the food industry find ways to work without using synthetic chemicals. Scientists also found other parts like gnemonol and gnetin C in the plant.
