Most trees in its family are vines. But this one grows as a small tree. It can reach 22 metres tall. The leaves stay green all year. New leaves start out bronze. Then they turn dark green.

This tree does not have flowers. Instead, it makes male and female parts. We call these strobili. People often mistake them for flowers. The female parts make seeds. These seeds look like fruit. They can be yellow, orange, or purple. The seeds have a large part inside called endosperm.

Many people eat this plant. They eat the seeds raw or roasted. They also cook the young leaves. In Indonesia, people make snacks from the seeds. They smash them into chips called emping. These chips are fried and crunchy.

Scientists found special parts in the seeds. One is called resveratrol. This part can help keep food fresh. It can also stop bad germs from growing.
