This plant has a unique shape. It has a thick, woody stem called a crown. Only two leaves grow from this crown. These leaves grow for the plant's whole life. They can become many meters long. As the leaves get old, they may split into ribbons. This happens because of the weather.

Welwitschia is one of the longest-living plants on Earth. Some plants can live for 2,000 years! They use cones to make seeds. There are separate male and female plants. Both types of plants make nectar. This sweet liquid attracts insects like flies. The insects carry pollen from one plant to another. This helps the plants make new seeds.

The plant is not in danger of dying out right now. Its long life helps it survive hard times. But it can still face problems. Overgrazing by animals or disease can hurt it. It only grows in one special desert area.
