The Namib is a coastal desert in Southern Africa.

It may be the oldest desert in the world. It has existed for 55 to 80 million years. The desert has many different parts. Near the coast, there are huge sand seas. Some dunes are very tall. These are the second-largest dunes in the world.

Further inland, the land has gravel plains and mountains.

It is a very dry place. It gets very little rain each year. Instead, the desert relies on fog.

This fog comes from the ocean. Cold water meets warm air to make it. This fog is a vital source of water for life. One plant, the welwitchia, uses fog to stay alive.

Some beetles also catch water from the fog. They use their bodies to collect tiny drops.

Many animals live here. Most are small, like beetles. But larger animals also live in the desert. You can find lions, elephants, and rhinos in the north. Gemsbok are large antelopes that live in the dry heat.
