The Kalahari is a large, sandy area in Southern Africa.

It covers much of Botswana. It also covers parts of Namibia and South Africa. The name means "the great thirst" or "a waterless place." This is because much of the land has red sand. There is very little water on the surface.

It is not a true desert. It has more plants than the Namib Desert. Many grasses and trees grow there. You might see Camelthorn trees.

Some areas have dry forests. In the north, the Okavango River flows into a large delta. This area has many marshes.
