It sits on the Arabian Peninsula. The desert covers parts of four countries. These are Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

The land is very big and wide. Most of it is made of sand dunes. These dunes can be very high. The sand looks reddish-orange. This color comes from a mineral called feldspar. Some areas are flat with gravel or salt.

Long ago, this place was different. Heavy rains made shallow lakes. These lakes lasted for many years. Animals like water buffalo lived there. You can still find their fossils today.

The desert is very dry now. It is a hard place to live. Camels are very important here. Some black camels in Oman are rare. People live in groups called tribes. They use roads to reach water and oil. Large oil fields are found under the sand. One field is the largest in the world.
