The Kalahari is a huge, sandy area in Southern Africa.

It covers much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The name comes from the Tswana words for "the great thirst" or "a waterless place." This name fits because much of the land is covered in red sand. There is very little water on the surface to be found. However, it is not a true desert like the Namib Desert. It has more plants and animals because it receives more rain.

Weather in the Kalahari changes with the seasons. The dry season lasts for eight months or more. The wet season usually lasts between one and four months. In the summer, it can get very hot with heavy thunderstorms.

The north and east are a bit wetter with dry forests and salt lakes. The south and west are much drier and look more like a semi-desert. The altitude helps keep the area cooler than the Sahara Desert. In the winter, you might even see frost on the ground.

This land has a very long and interesting history. It was not always such a dry place. Long ago, during the late Pleistocene, the area was much wetter and cooler. Fossils show that large animals like elephants and hippos once lived here. There were also big lakes and river systems across the land. One huge lake called Lake Makgadikgadi once covered a massive area. About 10,000 years ago, this lake eventually drained or dried out. This change turned the wet land into the sandy area we see today.

Many different living things call the Kalahari home. You might see a meerkat popping up from the sand.

Large predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards also live here. Many birds, such as eagles and owls, fly through the sky. When it rains, tens of thousands of flamingos visit the salt pans. Plants like the Camelthorn tree and various grasses grow in the soil. You can even find the unique kiwano fruit here. Some plants, like the devil's thorn, grow in the sandy ground.

The San people have lived in this region for 20,000 years. They are hunter-gatherers who know the land very well. They hunt wild animals using bows and poisoned arrows. They also gather food like berries, nuts, and insects. Finding water can be a hard job in the dry sand. The San find water in plant roots and desert melons. They even use empty ostrich eggshells to store their water.
