It is the largest hot desert in our world. Only two other deserts are larger: the cold deserts of Antarctica and the Arctic.

The name comes from a word meaning "desert." This vast area covers about 31% of the African continent. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. To the east, it reaches the Red Sea. To the south, it meets a belt of dry grassland called the Sahel.

The landscape is not just one big pile of sand. It is made of many different parts. Some areas are ergs, which are huge seas of sand dunes.

Other parts are hamada, which are rocky plateaus. You can also find dry valleys called wadis and salt flats. There are even high mountains rising from the sand. The Tibesti Mountains are one such range. The highest point is a volcano named Emi Koussi in northern Chad.

Some places have oases, where water allows life to grow.

History shows that the Sahara has always been changing. For hundreds of thousands of years, it has not always been a desert. It goes through a cycle every 20,000 years. During these cycles, it switches between being a desert and a grassy savanna. This happens because the Earth's axis wobbles as it moves around the Sun. This wobble changes where the rainy seasons fall in North Africa.

This means the land has been very different in the past.

The weather in the Sahara is famous for being extremely hot and dry.

The sky is usually clear, so the sun shines for a very long time. In some parts, the sun shines for over 4,000 hours every year. This heat makes the sand very hot during the day. It can reach temperatures as high as 158 degrees Fahrenheit. Because there are so few clouds, the heat can escape at night. This means nights can feel much cooler than the daytime.

Many different people and places are found within this huge region. Important cities like Timbuktu in Mali and Nouakchott in Mauritania sit in or near the desert.

The desert is also home to many different types of plants and animals. In the north, you might see date palms near water. In the south, the grass of the Sahel begins to grow. The desert is a massive part of the African landscape. It is a place of extreme heat, bright light, and amazing natural shapes.
