By the year 2100, experts think over 3.8 billion people will live there.

To find Africa, look at where it sits on a map. It straddles the equator and the prime meridian. To the north, the Mediterranean Sea borders the land. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west side. To the southeast, you will find the Indian Ocean. The Arabian Plate and the Gulf of Aqaba are to the northeast.

Some islands near the coast belong to other countries like France or Italy. The continent also includes the large island of Madagascar. These water boundaries help define the edges of the continent.

Africa is home to many different nations and cultures. There are 54 fully recognized sovereign states.

Modern humans, called Homo sapiens, likely started there 350,000 to 260,000 years ago. Many ancient societies grew in places like North and East Africa. Some famous groups include the people of Ancient Egypt. Over time, many powerful empires rose and fell across the land. These included the Mali, Songhai, and Zulu empires. Many people kept their history alive through oral tradition. This means they told stories and songs to pass down knowledge.

Nature in Africa is both amazing and changing. The continent has a huge variety of living things. It has the largest number of megafauna species in the world. This means it has many kinds of very large animals.
