earth science Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

The Atlantic Ocean is a huge part of our world. It is the second largest ocean on Earth.

This ocean covers about 17% of the entire planet's surface. It also holds about 24% of all the water on Earth. The ocean has a long, S-shaped basin. It sits between the Americas to the west and Europe and Africa to the east.

It is a vital part of how our world works. It connects to many other oceans through different paths. These include the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Indian Ocean in the southeast.

Deep under the waves, the ocean floor is not flat. A massive underwater mountain range called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through the middle.

This ridge divides the ocean into two main halves. It rises up about 2 to 3 kilometers from the seafloor. In some spots, the ridge reaches all the way to the surface. This creates volcanic islands like Iceland and the Azores.

The ridge is also a place where the Earth's plates move apart. This movement can create volcanoes and new ocean floor. This process is known as seafloor spreading.

Humans have a long history with this great sea. Ancient Greek writers mentioned it a very long time ago. They called it the "Sea of Atlas."

They believed it was a great river surrounding all land. Much later, during the Age of Discovery, explorers sailed these waters. The Norse were the first known humans to cross it. However, Christopher Columbus had a very famous trip in 1492. His journey led to many European powers exploring the Americas. This changed the history of many nations forever.

The ocean's water can feel very different depending on where you are. The South Atlantic stays warm all year long. This is because it is near the tropical equator.

The North Atlantic is quite different. It has a temperate climate with many seasons. This means the water can be very hot or very cold. The surface temperatures can range from below -2°C to over 30°C.

These changes happen because of the sun and ocean currents.

Today, the Atlantic Ocean is still very busy. It is a core part of global trade. Huge ships carry goods from one country to another across the water.

In the past, people even used the term "the pond" to talk about it. This was a funny way for people in Britain and America to speak. They used it to show how connected they were across the water. Even though it is a massive ocean, it feels like a bridge between lands. It remains a vital path for the whole world.
