Most of the sea is surrounded by land. To the west, it connects to the Atlantic Ocean. This happens through the Strait of Gibraltar. This narrow path is only 14 km wide. The sea also connects to the Black Sea and the Red Sea.

It covers about 2,500,000 square kilometers of surface. This is a small part of the global ocean. Many smaller seas are tucked inside it too. These include the Aegean and the Adriatic seas.

This sea has a very interesting history. Long ago, the water changed in a big way. About 5.9 million years ago, the sea was cut off from the ocean. It dried up over a long time. This was called the Messinian salinity crisis. Then, a huge event happened. About 5.3 million years ago, a massive flood refilled the sea. This event is known as the Zanclean flood.

It is amazing to think how the water came back. The sea is quite deep on average. It reaches depths of 1,500 meters. The deepest spot is the Calypso Deep. This spot is over 5,100 meters down.

Many famous groups of people lived here. The sea helped early civilizations grow and thrive. For example, the Egyptians and the Greeks lived near the water.

People used the sea to travel and trade goods. This helped different cultures share new ideas. In the past, the Levant had people living there by 12,000 BC. Later, the Roman Empire became very strong. They controlled every part of the coast for centuries. They even called the sea "Our Sea."

This made the sea feel like a private lake.

Many different countries have shores on this sea. You can find Spain, France, and Italy along the coast.

Other countries include Greece, Turkey, and Egypt.

There are also many large islands in the water. Sicily and Sardinia are the two biggest islands. Some of these islands were actually made by volcanoes.

The water stays mild in the winter. It becomes warm during the summer months. This creates a special kind of weather for the land.

People have called this sea many different names. The Romans called it the "Great Sea."

The word Mediterranean comes from Latin words. It means "in the middle of land." This describes how the sea is surrounded by earth. In Arabic, it is often called the "Middle Sea." Other people called it the "White Sea." This might be because they linked colors to directions. For them, white meant the west. It is a sea with many stories to tell.
