It is a busy place where land and water meet in many ways. Many islands sit within these blue waters, forming beautiful groups.

Water moves through the Aegean in a special way. It moves in a circle called a counterclockwise gyre.

Salty water from the Mediterranean moves north along the Turkish coast. At the same time, less dense water flows out from the Black Sea. This water travels through the Dardanelles and the Bosporus straits. This movement is shaped by the weather and fresh water from rivers. The deep parts of the sea reach 2,639 meters down near Karpathos.

History has shaped this sea for thousands of years. In ancient times, the Greeks lived along the coasts and islands.
