These islands are part of a big group called an archipelago. This name used to mean the sea itself. Now it means any group of islands.

The weather on these islands is very distinct. They have a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means the summers feel very hot. The winters are mild and not too cold. This pattern is a key part of life there. Many people visit to see the sunny weather. It is a warm place to live and visit.

History has changed who ruled these islands. Some were once called the Italian Islands of the Aegean. Italy took control during the Italo-Turkish War in 1912. They kept them from 1923 until 1947. This happened through the Treaty of Lausanne. Later, the Treaty of Peace in 1947 changed things. These islands were then given to Greece.
