There are 15 large islands and 150 smaller ones. Only 26 of these islands have people living on them.

The weather in the Dodecanese is mostly warm and sunny. Most of the islands have a Mediterranean climate. This means they have hot summers. Some islands like Karpathos, Kasos, and Nisyros have a different type of climate. These islands are semi-arid, which means they are quite dry. They still have mild winters and hot summers. The winters in Rhodes, Kos, and Patmos are very mild. In fact, they are among the mildest in all of Europe.

The name Dodecanese means "The Twelve Islands." This name has a long and interesting history. In the past, the name was used for a different group of islands. It used to describe the Cyclades islands near Delos. The name first appeared in records during the 8th century. Later, the name moved to this current island group. This happened during the Ottoman period. For a long time, many islands had special rules for taxes. They also had the power to govern themselves.

In 1912, many islands were taken by Italy. By 1920, the name was used for the whole group. The islands finally joined Greece in 1947.

Many famous people and events happened here long ago. The islands have been lived in since prehistoric times. The Minoans and Mycenaean Greeks lived here first. Later, the Dorians arrived around 1100 BC. They built great cities on Rhodes like Lindos and Kameiros.

Today, the Dodecanese is a place where history and nature meet. You can still see many old things from the past. There are hundreds of ancient churches still standing.
