The island is part of the Karpathos-Kasos regional unit. It also includes the smaller Saria Island. An earthquake once joined Saria and Karpathos together. Now they are separate islands.

Nature makes the island a very interesting place to visit. The climate is hot and semi-arid. This means it is quite dry. However, the winters are some of the mildest in Europe. The highest point on the island is a peak called Kali Limni. You can find many different kinds of beaches here. The south coast has fine white sand.

The east coast has smaller, gravelly beaches. Some beaches in the north can only be reached by sea or a jeep. The west coast is very open to the wind.

History has shaped the island for a very long time. Ancient writers like Homer mentioned the island in the Iliad. He called it Krapathos.

In the past, the island was closely linked with Rhodes. Many different groups have ruled the land. The Romans took control in 42 BCE. Later, the Byzantine Empire held the island. In the 14th century, the island was part of the Latin Church. The Ottoman Turks ruled from 1538 until 1912. After that, Italy occupied the island. Finally, Karpathos joined the Kingdom of Greece in 1948.

Life on the island is spread across eleven villages.

The people in the northern mountains are very traditional. They keep old ways of dressing and speaking. The local dialect is similar to the speech in Crete and Cyprus. In 2021, about 6,567 people lived on the island. This number grows to 20,000 in the summer. Many people visit for the Panagias festival in August.
