Lemnos is a large island in the northern Aegean Sea.

It is the eighth-largest island in Greece. Most of the land is flat and easy to walk on. However, the northwest part of the island is quite different. It is rocky and has many mountains. The highest peak is Mount Skopia, which stands 430 meters above the sea.

The weather on the island is a Mediterranean climate. This means the winters are usually mild. Sometimes, you might even see snow on the ground. The island is famous for its strong winds. Because of this, people call it "the wind-ridden one" in Greek. In February, the average wind speed can reach 20.7 km/h. It is often 2 to 5 degrees Celsius cooler here than in Athens.

There are two main towns where people live and work. Myrina is on the western coast and has a good harbor. It is the main place for trade with the mainland.

Moudros is another important town on the eastern shore. It sits inside a large bay in the middle of the island.

The island even has a small 7-hectare desert called Pachies Ammoudies.

Ancient stories say the island was sacred to Hephaestus. He was the Greek god of metal work. Some people thought the island was volcanic because of him. They believed fire sometimes came out of the mountain called Mosychlos.

Archaeologists have found many real things from the past here. They found stone tools from the 12th millennium BC at the Ouriakos site. They also found a building from the Early Bronze Age at Poliochne.

History shows that many different groups have lived on Lemnos. The earliest people were likely a Thracian tribe called the Sintians. Later, the island was part of the Athenian empire.

In the Middle Ages, the island changed hands many times. It was part of the Byzantine Empire for a long period. Later, the Navigajoso family ruled parts of the island. They held different forts like Moudros and Kotsinos. The island has always been an important place in the Aegean Sea.
