Chios is famous for something called mastic gum. Because of this, people call it "the Mastic Island."

In the south, there are seven special villages. These are Mesta, Pyrgi, Olympi, Kalamoti, Vessa, Lithi, and Elata. They are known as the Mastichochoria. These villages have been making mastic since the Roman period. They have narrow streets and fortified gates. People built them this way to stay safe from pirates.
