From 2700 to 1420 BC, the Minoans lived here. They were Europe's first advanced civilization. Later, the Mycenaean people from mainland Greece took over. Many other groups ruled the island over the centuries. These included the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Venetians. The Ottoman Empire also ruled Crete for a time. In 1898, the island achieved autonomy. Finally, Crete became part of Greece in December 1913.
