Knossos is a very old and famous site on the island of Crete.

Many people believe it is the oldest city in Europe. It started as a tiny group of people living there a long time ago. These early settlers likely arrived by boat from a place called Anatolia.

They lived in small huts made of wood and mud. These people grew crops and kept animals like sheep and goats. They even used stone tools to help with their daily work.

As time passed, the village grew into a large settlement.

People began building more permanent houses with stone and mud-brick walls. These homes had flat roofs made of branches and clay. Some houses even had many rooms and might have had a second floor.

As the village became more complex, a large building called the Great House appeared. This building might have been the very first version of a palace. It shows how people were starting to live together in a more organized way.

Later, the famous Minoan civilization built a massive palace at Knossos.

This palace was much larger than the old village houses. It covered about five acres of land when you count the extra buildings. The palace was not just a home for a king or queen. Instead, it worked as a center for religion and for running the community.

It had a large open courtyard in the middle for public events. There was even a theater that could hold 400 people.

The people of Knossos were very successful at trading goods.

They traded items like olive oil, wine, and wool with many other lands. They used huge storage jars called pithoi to keep these goods safe. These jars could grow to be five feet tall!

They also made beautiful art called frescoes to decorate their walls. These paintings showed scenes from everyday life and people in lovely dresses. This wealth helped Knossos become a very important place in the ancient world.

History shows that the palace faced many changes and hard times.

Around 1350 BC, a fire destroyed the palace and caused it to collapse. We do not know if this was caused by a natural disaster or something else. Later, during the Early Iron Age, Knossos became a prosperous settlement again.

Eventually, it became a Roman colony during the Classical period. Today, many people visit the site to see what life was like long ago.
