This culture was very important to the history of Greece. It set the stage for many stories we know today.

Life in these states was very organized. Each state was led by a powerful king. The king had a special name, which was a wanax.

A small group of elite warriors held a lot of power too. The society was built on a rigid system of levels. This meant everyone had a specific place in the social order. They used large palace centers to manage their economy and people.

This civilization grew from the local people in mainland Greece. They were likely inspired by the Minoan culture on the island of Crete.
