People used it to keep track of many things. Even today, no one has figured out how to read it. It remains one of history's greatest puzzles.

Writing with Linear A worked in a very special way. It is called a logosyllabic system. This means some signs stand for sounds called syllables. Other signs stand for whole words or ideas.

He gave it the name "Linear" for a simple reason. The characters were made of straight lines. These lines were often scratched into soft clay. This was different from the older Cretan hieroglyphs. Those older marks looked more like pictures. Linear A grew on its own. It did not come from Egypt or Mesopotamia.

There are many interesting facts about these ancient marks. The script has over 300 different signs.

Linear B was used later by the Mycenaeans. Scholars found that Linear B was an early form of Greek. Linear A shares many of the same shapes with it. However, the language in Linear A is still unknown. We can see the symbols, but we cannot hear the words. It connects us to the Minoan world through its beautiful, simple lines.
