Ancient Greek is a group of languages used in the ancient world. It was spoken from around 1500 BC until about 300 BC.

This language is very important because it helped people share stories and ideas. Famous writers like Homer used it to write epic poems. These poems include the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Because of these writers, many Greek words moved into the English language. People in the Western world have studied it for a long time. It has been a standard subject since the Renaissance.

This language was not just one single way of speaking. It was made of many different dialects, which are local versions of a language. Some dialects were used for writing books, while others were only found on inscriptions. The main groups were Attic, Ionic, Doric, Aeolic, and Arcadocypriot.

For example, the poet Sappho wrote using the Aeolian dialect on the island of Lesbos. The Doric dialect had even more small groups. These included different styles for Crete, Sparta, and Corinth. Many of these groups also lived in colonies far away from Greece.

History shows us that the language changed a lot over time. We do not know everything about how it started. This is because there is not much evidence from the very beginning. However, scholars know of a form called Mycenaean Greek from the Bronze Age.

Major dialect groups likely formed by 1120 BC. This was around the time of the Dorian invasions. People used alphabetic writing for these dialects starting in the 8th century BC. The Greeks of that time saw themselves as three groups: Dorians, Aeolians, and Ionians.

Many different names and places are part of this history. After Alexander the Great made many conquests, a new way of speaking appeared. This was called Koine, or Common Greek. It was based mostly on the Attic dialect. Koine eventually replaced many of the older dialects. By the 6th century AD, Koine had changed into Medieval Greek. Some very old styles even survived in small places. The Doric dialect can still be found in the Tsakonian language in Sparta.

Ancient Greek works in a very specific way. It is a highly inflected language, which means words change their endings. Nouns have five different cases and three genders. They can be singular, dual, or plural. Verbs are also complex with many different forms. They use different moods, like the indicative or the imperative. They also use different voices, such as active or passive. This structure helped people express very precise meanings in their writing and speech.
